Retirement Pathways is a partnership between Anne Cannings, Jane Parslow and Nigel Pacey. We are qualified in, and have many years practice in, coaching and facilitation and came together to share our skills and experience.

Our mission is to challenge, change and improve:

  • Challenge the perception of retirement

  • Change how people plan for retirement, and

  • Improve the experience of retirement

Retirement Pathways’ work reflects a continued commitment to research in, and inclusion of, the latest thinking into our coaching and workshops.

We have developed bespoke materials and exercises based on evidence and the work of leading authors in the field.

Much of the content is not available elsewhere and is continually refined to reflect client feedback. These materials can be selected and tailored to individual client needs.

Anne, Nigel and Jane are Retirement Pathways

Our Story

Nigel, Jane and Anne have all had long careers in different fields (see Our Coaches below for more) and each of us had developed our own businesses working in the fields of leadership, change, career, life and retirement transition. We would occasionally meet at professional events and began collaborations in Retirement Life Plan and RED Retirement Coaching.

In 2024 we decided we would pool our resources in a new venture under the name Retirement Pathways and the first year was very much an exploration of our values and business aims. It was also an opportunity to test whether our vision for a specialist retirement business had traction.

After a year of testing our work through client activity, social media, networking and conversations at Business Expos, the feedback we received was so positive that we decided to formalise our offerings through forming a limited liability partnership.

The breadth of experience and expertise all three of us brought to the field has resulted in a more streamlined yet extensive range of offerings focused on the psychological and emotional transitions surrounding retirement.

The Retirement Transition

How We Work

The Transformation Bridge

We work with you to understand what has been important about your past that you wish to take into your retirement.

You will develop awareness of the challenges that retirement brings and plan how to overcome them.

Creating a vision for your retirement and an action plan to achieve it, you will transition successfully to the retirement you choose.

The Transformation Bridge

Client Led, Experienced, Evidence Driven

Retirement is going through an intense period of change and there are many different options open now to people approaching retirement age.

That’s why retirement planning needs a flexible and personalised approach, to find the solutions best suited to you.

Our work with individuals has no fixed timescales and is never prescriptive. Through our coaching and workshops, we are guided by the needs of the person; we will never instruct, recommend, or tell you what you should do.

Our coaches and workshop facilitators are retirement specialists and understand the challenges, having been through a retirement experience themselves.

They have the breadth and depth of experience to appreciate the adjustments the transition requires. As well as many years of research and training, they bring a wide selection of useful tools and exercises to help you work through the changes.

“Using a combination of open questions, which allowed me time and space to explore my own thoughts and preferences, together with information and suggestions based on the experience of other people in retirement, it led me to have a much clearer vision about what my retirement could be like and what I need to do to prepare for it”

Nigel had a 25 year career in social housing including 14 years at senior management level. As well as direct experience of helping individual and families in need, he also gained a huge amount of experience in business management and people management.

He pivoted away from social housing in 2008 to form his own business providing leadership and management coaching for senior and middle managers in the public sector.

Having in a very real sense retired from social housing, Nigel experienced the challenges of transitioning which have been at the heart of the retirement coaching which he began in 2019.

He brings that practical awareness and understanding of the issues people face in retirement to his coaching to help people recognise and tackle their challenges and to design a positive future for themselves.

Nigel believes that he can use his life and work experience to help others face their transition challenges and create for themselves a fulfilling retirement.

Outside work, Nigel has a very full life, learning French, taking care of his 5 year old granddaughter, walking for fitness and pleasure, spending time in France and whisky appreciation.

Anne Cannings

Jane has been coaching since 2006, specialising in midlife transitions, and particularly Retirement, since 2018. Her coaching focuses on helping people through the challenges of changing occupation or stopping paid word altogether.

Her background includes over 30 years in project management training, consulting and mentoring, which means that she has a wide experience of change within businesses. She has always been interested in how people respond to the challenges that change brings, and what can make it a positive experience.

Having been through her own professional transition in her late 50s, Jane now brings that wealth of practical knowledge and experience to her work. She uses a variety of tools and techniques to help her clients see what’s possible on the other side of change and to support them while they work towards achieving it.

Outside her coaching, Jane pursues her own goals of staying fit, travelling, improving her Spanish and taking up new activities whenever she can – from archery to zip-wiring!

She loves variety and has worked with public bodies, scientific, engineering and IT companies, banking, professional services, private healthcare, local authorities, retail, not-for-profit organisations, NHS Trusts, housing associations and the emergency services.

Anne believes we are never finished with personal learning and encourages others to improve their situation. She enjoys seeing clients develop their horizons, take control of their actions and experience joy in what the future may hold.

Anne spent many years managing and directing amateur dramatics and enjoys dragging the dog through the Surrey countryside. She likes to live by her values so is always learning something new or creative. Her latest pursuit is getting messy with clay; she has yet to master throwing on a wheel and is probably a few years’ off appearing on the Pottery Throwdown!
